5 Tips For A Fabulous First Dance

Nov 24, 2022 | Wedding, Wedding Planning

Here are my 5 Tips For A Fabulous First Dance! I love photographing first dance moments. Your moves your way to open up the evening with some unique dance steps. Moreover, it set’s the tone for the party! Whether you’re planning a quick 30 second shuffle before asking your guests to join you on the dance floor or planning a flamboyant ‘Strictly’ style choreographed Tango, these handy hints will get your party started and hopefully keep it all stress free!

Tip #1 – Choose A First Dance Song To Suit You Both

Firstly, choose a song that suits you both. It could be a tune with a special meaning or an acoustic tune to fit with the theme of your dance or wedding. It also doesn’t have to be slow, it’s ok to up the tempo at any time or even start off with strong moves! As long as it reflects both of your personalities and you have fun while you trip the light fantastic!

Tip #2 – Be Confident

Whether you enjoy being in the spotlight or not. As long as you remember there are no hard fast rules that say you even have to have a first dance. Likewise, if you choose to have a quick twirl to one verse of a song before asking all your guests to join you on the dance floor, that’s perfectly ok too. It’s all about having fun! As long as you feel comfortable and confident, look each other in the eye and forget about everyone else you will have a flawless first dance.

Tip #3 – Keep it Short & Sweet

Keep your first dance short and sweet! If you want to keep the party vibe going, 2 -3 minutes is plenty of time to keep everyone engaged and wanting more. Captivated guests are more likely to jump straight onto the dance floor to join you afterwards! As your wedding photographer, I only need a minute to capture that epic photo moment!

Tip #4 – Learn a few moves

Think about having a couple of dancing lessons, to eliminate any awkwardness or nerves. It might sound a bit over the top but it can also be really good fun. Some couples go full out and learn a dance routine with a first dance wedding choreographer. It is always so much fun to see the guest’s reactions when they are not expecting it! (Also makes amazing photographs!) If dance lessons aren’t for you, get to know your music and maybe add in a simple twirl mid-dance (or a dip if you’re feeling adventurous)!

Tip #5 – Be present and enjoy the moment

The most important tip is to be present and enjoy the moment. Whether you’ve decided to keep it simple, have confetti canons mid-way (my favourite) or add in a ‘Dirty Dancing’ lift! It’s all about having fun and enjoying every single moment without letting those nerves get the better of you!
